·         Power On Self Test(POST)

b.      Mention one function of video card.

àFunction of video card is to generate a feed of output images to a display device.

c.       Mention one defect of LCD Monitor.

àThe defects of LCD monitor are:

·         Pixel dead

·         Stuck pixel

·         Backlight Bleed (if your pixels all look ok but you are noticing area that are strangely brighter than rest of the screen. Well if these areas are toward the corner or edges you could be suffering from the bleeding)

·         IPS glow

d.      What is external DVD-ROM.*

à DVD-ROM is a read-only digital versatile disc (DVD) commonly used for storing large software applications.

e.      What is media rotation?*

à backup rotation scheme refers to a system of backing up data to computer media (such as tapes) that minimizes, via re-use, the number of media used

f.        How is ventilation implemented in computer?*

àVentilation is implemented in computer by simply making sure that you provide holes on system case for air exchange.

g.       Write one advantages of virus.

àOne advantage of virus:

·         They are the main source of revenue for antivirus companies.

·         They can be used in certain cases to get the details of a criminal or for investigation purposes.

h.      What happens to the quality of display if resolution is increased?

à When resolution increases, quality of display also increases due to a higher pixel density. In fact, text and images may also become smaller because more pixels per square inch are being displayed.

i.         Sabita was unable to type the numbers from the numpad of her laptop. What may be the problem?

àThe problem may be:

·         Num lock is off

·         Damaged keyboard

Group B

j.        Why is processor cooling important? How is it implemented in the computer?
à Processor cooling is important to prevent them from overheating and burning out the tiny circuits inside. It is implemented in the computer by using different techniques and tools such as fans, heat sink.

k.       Draw a neat diagram to show track and sector.

à

l.         Mention two functions of mouse.

àThe function of mouse are:

·         Move the mouse cursor

·         To open or execute a program

·         To select text or a file or highlight and select multiple files at once.

·         To Drag-and-drop something

·         To scroll

m.    Write any two reasons for creating computer virus.

àTwo reasons for creating computer virus:

·         To make money.

·         To steal sensitive information (credit card numbers, passwords, personal details, data etc.)

·         To take control of a computer and use it for specific tasks

·         To cause problems and trouble for others.

·         To prove a point, to prove it can be done, to prove ones skill or for revenge purposes

·         To Cripple a Computer or Network

n.      Differentiate warm boot and cold boot

à

o.      Write down the steps to enter BIOS setup.

àThe steps to enter the BIOS setup:

·         Reboot your computer

·         As soon as you see the manufacturer’s logo, press the Setup key repeatedly. (Setup key varies depends on manufacturer and model.)

·         As long as you pressed the correct key, the BIOS will load.

Group C

p.      Explain CRT monitor with the help of neat diagram.

àAlready

q.      Explain any four parts of motherboard.

àAny four parts of motherboard are explained below:

·         CPU (Central Processing Unit) chip: CPU is the electronic circuitry in a computer that executes instructions that make up a program. It is also known as a central processor or the main processor. The CPU executes the basic logic, arithmetic, controlling as well as input/output (I/O) operations specified by the instructions in the desktop programs. CPU socket provides mechanical and electrical connection between CPU and motherboard.

·         ROM chip: ROM is a non-volatile storage whose contents are very difficult to modify after the manufacturing of the storage device The BIOS information is kept in ROM, which is only a few KB in size and tells how to start, what to do when it starts, which driver to load, CPU fan speed information, boot sequences information, system date time, and so on.

·         CMOS Battery: CMOS stands for complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor and found in the motherboard as a circular coin shape. CMOS battery powers the BIOS firmware. BIOS needs to remain operational even when the computer isn’t plugged into the power source. That is why CMOS battery comes in.

·         RAM: RAM stands for Random Access Memory. RAM stores working data and machine code temporarily. Data stored in it will get erased as soon as power is turned off. A memory slot or Ram slot allows RAM chip to be inserted in the computes motherboard. Depending on the motherboard, there will be 2 to 4 memory slots.

r.        Mention significance of backup scheduling and media rotation.*

à

s.       Write the cause and solution to the problem "mouse not detected".

àCauses:

·         Mouse is not connected correctly

·         Mouse driver outdated or missing

·         Faulty USB port

·         Damaged Mouse

·         Other USB driver issues

Solution:

·         Connect mouse correctly to USB port

·         Reinstall or update the mouse driver

·         Try connecting moue to the fine port

·         Replace the mouse

·         Uninstall and reinstall USB port drivers

t.        Write down the steps to change the background picture on display.

àSteps:

·         Right-click an empty space on the desktop. Doing so will prompt a drop-down menu.

·         Click Personalize. This option is at the bottom of the drop-down menu.

·         Now, click the box beneath the "Background" heading. Then click "Picture".

·         A bunch of recent and sample pictures will be listed and can be used by clicking one. You can also click Browse and choose a picture if you don't like the stock photos.

·         Furthermore, you can click the box beneath "Choose a fit" to change the way the picture is displayed (e.g., filling your entire screen).

u.      What is power protection? Explain two power protection devices.

à Power protection is defined as detecting abnormal operating conditions in a power system and preventing further threats such as instability or equipment damages. Two power protection devices are explained below:

·         UPS: An uninterruptible power supply or uninterruptible power source is an electrical apparatus that provides emergency power to a load when the input power source or mains power fails. UPS devices use batteries to store electrical energy which can be discharged through an inverter assembly when the mains power supply fails or fluctuates. The UPS can supply power only for a short period. The function of UPS are:

o   Absorb relatively small power surges.

o   Smooth out noisy power sources.

o   Continuously provides power to equipment during line sags.

o   Automatically shuts down equipment during long power outages.

o   Monitoring and logging of the status of the power supply.

·         Volt Guard: Volt guard is also a power protection device. It controls the fluctuation of electric voltage. The volt guard provides constant output voltage to the computer system if high input voltage is supplied from the source. It provides constant output voltage between the ranges of 220 to 240 volts.

·         Voltage stabilizer: It is an electrical appliance which is designed to deliver a constant voltage to a load at its output terminals regardless of the changes in the input or incoming supply voltage. It protects the equipment or machine against over voltage, under voltage, and other voltage surges. Voltage stabilizers regulate the fluctuating input voltage before it could be fed to the load (or equipment which is sensitive to voltage variations)
