18     Why is graphics card used?

àIt is used to increase the video memory of a computer, and make its display quality more high-definition. It makes the computer more powerful and gives it the capacity to do more high-level works. It is very much important for gaming and video editing on a PC.

19     What is media size matching?

àIt is the process of matching the size of medium to the amount of data you need to backup.

20     What is secondary storage?

àIt is a non-volatile device that holds data until it is deleted or overwritten.

                Example: HDD, Pen drive etc.

21     Why blue ray disk is used for storing data?

àSince the wavelength of blue light is shorter than that of red light, more data can be packed on to a Blu-ray disc, thus the blue light can be used to ‘resolve’ smaller areas of data on the disc. What this means is that the physical areas where data is recorded on the surface of a Blu-ray disc are comparatively smaller than CDs and DVDs. This means that more data can be recorded using the same surface area with a Blu-ray disc than with the other optical disc formats.

22     List the types of monitors available in the market.

àThe types of monitor available in the market are:

·         CRT(Cathode Ray Tube) monitors

Group 'C'

29      What is system BIOS? Write the function of BIOS and explain them.

àSystem BIOS is firmware used to perform hardware initialization during the booting process (power-on startup), and to provide runtime services for operating systems and programs.

The four main functions of a PC BIOS

·         POST - Test the computer hardware and make sure no errors exist before loading the operating system.

·         Bootstrap Loader - Locate the operating system. If a capable operating system is located, the BIOS will pass control to it.

·         BIOS drivers - Low-level drivers that give the computer basic operational control over your computer's hardware.

·         BIOS setup or CMOS setup - Configuration program that allows you to configure hardware settings including system settings such as computer passwords, time, and date.

30      Write about the construction and operation of HDD. Describe cylinder, sector and track also.

à HDD is a magnetic storage device. It consists of several platters which are usually made up of aluminum and are coated with magnetic material. HDD stores the data on these platters. The platters are stacked onto a spindle and rotated by a spindle motor at very high speeds. Each platters requires two read/write head, one for each side. Each read/write head is attached to separate arm, and controlled by common arm assembly.

When a the computer wants to retrieve data off of the hard drive, the motor will spin up the platters and the arm will move itself to the appropriate position above the platter where the data is stored. The heads on the arm will detect the magnetic bits on the platters and convert them into the appropriate data that can be used by the computer. Conversely, when data is sent to the drive, the heads will this time, send magnetic pulses at the platters changing the magnetic properties of the platter, and thus storing the information.

·         Track: A disk drive track is a circular path on the surface of a platter on which information is magnetically recorded and from which recorded information is read.

·         Cylinder: A cylinder is the  set of all of the tracks of equal diameter through each platter

·         Sector: The wedge shape section of circular track is called sector.

·         Head: Disk read/write heads are the small parts of a disk drive which move above the disk platter and transform the platter's magnetic field into electrical current (read the disk) or, vice versa, transform electrical current into magnetic field (write the disk).

31     Why backup scheduling is needed to computer? Which device and media do you use for backup? Explain any one.

à Backup scheduling is needed to computer for specifying which data sources and data gets backed up, when, and how often.

I can use following devices for backup:

·         Tape Driver: The main advantage of using tape drives is they are reliable storage devices as data stored on the tape drives can be read securely even after decades of storage. Because of this, many enterprises (or large businesses) use tape drives as their main backup system.

·         Optical discs (CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray) are popular storage devices for home users. They are commonly used for system backup and restore as they are inexpensive and portable. However, optical discs are more prone to damage or scratches, and the data on the disc may become unreadable very easily. Optical discs require special hardware/software to read and write, and this may be a problem if your laptops or desktop PCs don’t have an optical drive or it does not support all drive formats.

·         SD cards, or memory cards, are small storage devices that are used to backup documents, pictures, video, or audio files. The advantages of using SD cards are they are compact, portable and provide easy access to data. They are widely used to save small amount of data on mobile phones, cameras, and computers. SD cards are more expensive than hard disks, CD or DVDs. In addition, SD cards can break easily, and you may lose data stored on it.

·         Hard disk drives (HDD) are the most popular data storage devices for home and business users. Hard drives are portable and affordable storage devices. They are available in different shapes and sizes with storage capacities ranging from megabytes to terabytes. You can easily connect a HDD to your computer and backup files to it.

·         Solid State Drive (SSD) is another storage device which is replacing hard disk drives. SSD's are much faster, more durable, and reliable than HDD's. However, SSD's are more expensive (although costs are decreasing) and the device cost can increase considerably with the storage capacity.

·         Reinstall the scanner driver software

·         Connect the scanner correctly.

·         Try connecting scanner to the fine port

·         Replace the scanner

32      What may be the causes of monitor failure? Write down the appropriate solution.

àCauses:

·         High or low resolution

·         Loose or faulty video cable.

·         Display card driver is not installed properly

·         SMPS doesn’t provide accurate power

·         CPU not fixed properly on socket

·         Restart the computer is safe mode and reset the best resolution.

·         Tighten down the cable on both end or simply replace the cable.

·         Reinstall the display card driver properly.

·         Check the SMPS

·         Fix the CPU properly on the socket.

àCauses:

·         Virus Infection

·         Running many programs at the one time(Ram overload)

·         No free space in hard drive.

·         CPU fan doesn’t working properly

·         Low speed of CPU

·         No enough memory

Solutions:

·         Run a virus scan and keep up-to-date Anti-Virus.

·         Close the unnecessary programs.

·         Delete unnecessary files from the hard disk

·         Check the CPU fan

·         Replace the older CPU with the high speed CPU

·         Upgrade the memory
